Say hello to advertisers in Google Earth

Link – Ads Coming to Google Earth

apparently you can expect to see some form of onscreen advertising in GE soon. But, to turn them off you will need to have a subscription of Google Earth Plus or Pro. It will be interesting to see how this is implemented and what the reaction will be from the general GE users.

Well there goes the reason to use Google Earth. Who wants to create a KML and then have Google earn money off of my work? I said back in August that Google was an advertising company and it becomes clear that is what Google Earth is to them, ad revenue. All these really nice Google Earth KML/KMZ “hacks” are now going to be used to further increase Google’s revenue.

Most of us knew this day was coming and unfortunately it is just about here. It will be interesting to see how it all works, will downloading any KML files from PortlandMaps get me results for real estate agents, mortgage refinance companies and probably Vioxx ads? The implications of this are huge as eBay ads for just about anything can now be fed to users just trying to find out voting districts in their home towns.

The sooner ArcGIS Explorer is out the better it will be for those who want to distribute maps to the general populace. KML still is important, but Google Earth has become so much less relevant to my workflow.

Hey, what about NASA’s World Wind? Personally, I had a feeling this day would eventually come, so I’ve been spending more time with NASA’s World Wind (which now has a Shapefile loader built in…) Development for WW seems to be moving along at a pretty rapid pace, which is unusual considering the fact that this is an open source application.

We all knew this was coming… although I dont expect it to be really that much of an issue… I just ignore most of the adsense ads anyway, they seem to be on just about every webpage now.

I can personally ignore them (as I do very well), but given how much people make off of google ads on their webpages, I have to say others don’t. I’d hate to have business taken away from me because a client saw an ad in a map I sent them.

    hi all

some of the guys over on the Keyhole BBS have uncovered some more (undoc’d) technical details for adSense inclusion in GE.

It looks like there are new KML tags (e.g. Channel: http://kml.tjworld.net/#Channel ) that will show up in the Places panel and possibly in the Balloon InfoWindows. What is unknown is whether the free GE client will inject these tags for any loaded KML document -or- is this something that can be tweaked by the KML publisher. In the former, GE will force ads on all free GE users in the latter, the KML publisher could actually use the adSense API to actually make money for themselves.

It does not look like ads will appear over the map. (let’s cross our fingers on that one)
