What’s Coming in ArcGIS Desktop 9.2

ESRI ArcGISESRI has quietly posted the new features in ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 on the ESRI website. Its been pretty quiet around here because of the closed 9.2 beta, but it seems ESRI is beginning to ramp up the PR machine. See the whole list on their webpage but a couple of the more interesting ones to me are below:

  • Mouse wheel support
  • Ability to rename folder connections and customize appearance of the tree in ArcCatalog
  • Direct read of Microsoft Excel files
  • Support for OGC GML Simple Features data
  • New File Geodatabase for personal data collections with support for single-user editing without a DBMS
  • The new cartographic tools
  • Georeferencing toolbar that allows users to move, rotate, and scale CAD files using the mouse
  • Maplex as optional extension for ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Engine, and ArcIMS (ArcMap Server) for better labeling on web mapping or embedded applications
  • Support for Google Earth KML and OGC GML 3.1.1 through the use of Safe Software’s FME 2006 engine

  1. You forgot the most important one:

    Stability/Quality
    - Significantly improved, driven by testing and user reports

Of course when have we not heard that before? ;)

Do you know if the new version will be compatible with the 64 bit Windows OS?

  3. James Fee says:

By compatible I assume you mean run at 64-bit because it is already compatible now.

I doubt we’ll ever see a true 64-bit ArcGIS as I’d assume it would be a total rewrite, but that is just me guessing.

  4. Eric Ertl says:

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it.

Will the 9.2 ArcGIS have better support for temporal data through the WMS? ESRI promises animations, etc. but I’m not sure if these new features will also work through the WMS protocol. The latest NASA World Wind has support for the TIME argument in WMS and it works great. I’m hoping ArcGIS 9.2 will have something similar.

  6. James Fee says:

Daniel, can’t say. I haven’t looked at the latest 9.2 beta so it may or may not.

If I had to guess, I’d say no, but that is a very uninformed no.

  7. Daniel Martinez says:

James, appreciate your input. I’m also a bit doubtful….
Are you aware of any extension or plugin to ArcGIS 9.1 that extends the WMS capability to add TIME support? I’ve been searching to no avail….thx.

  8. James Fee says:

If the Data Interoperability extension can’t do it, I doubt any others can. I’m not sure if CarbonArc Lite can do it, but you might want to check it out.

  9. Daniel Martinez says:

I’ve e-mailed the Carbon group and am waiting for a response. Now that ArcGIS has added more support for WMS, a lot of these third-party ArcGIS/WMS extensions will be going out of business.
James, I thought I saw a C/JMTK category in your blog but I don’t see it anymore. Or am I going blind?

  10. James Fee says:

    I don’t think I’ve ever blogged about the C/JMTK…

  11. Daniel Martinez says:

Ok, time to find an optometrist….

  12. Daniel Martinez says:

I made contact with the Carbon Project folks and they said Carbon Arc Lite does not currently provide the TIME capability that I’m looking for.
I’m looking into the possibility of creating my own extension to the ArcGIS 9.1 WMS capability using a VB script…wish me luck.

Let us know how it goes. I’m sure many will be very interested.
