Google can’t restrict access to public data. Only Congress, POTUS, state and local officals can restrict access to public data. The only access Google can restrict is, accessing public data on THEIR server.

I agree whole-heartly with CamW. The data is already out there and available to people. Google is trying to be the one-stop shopping spot. Instead of people having to go here and there to find what they need, in the right format and have the right software to view/use the data. (Eventhou I don’t like the one-stop shopping format, takes all the fun out of it )

Kinda reminds me of the DRG - Internet Archive repayment thing, which hit the blogs awhile back. Instead of going here and there to find the DRGs. People wanted the DRGs all in one spot. Eventhough there were already places on the net where all DRGs were in one spot.

Google is often cited as saying they want to organize all the worlds data. This is exactly what they appear to be doing with NASA. Unfortunately it’s seems more often than not that Google only wants you accessing their organized data with their tools on their terms. I literally just saw across this post on PlanetGS which seems to support this idea. Again this shouldn’t be surprising to anyone, but NASA (or any public agency for that matter) should seriously consider this before they start relying on Google to server their data.
