That way, I think I’d have a better opportunity to track and control usage.

No mention of MapServer in the TOC, but there are at least two books that already focus partially or wholly on MapServer. There is a reference to GeoServer, which is another product I’ve had success with in a development environment. One thing that I like with MapServer versus GeoServer is the .NET flavor of Mapscript, which makes MapServer and ASP.NET a great combination.

I see the author already has a book about Google Maps API, and I have the “Pro” series Google Maps book. What’s really needed, and I’m sure will be along soon, is a VE book.
