Pacific 10 Referees are the Worst

What a horrible way to end your season and possibly cost you a NCAA tournament birth. If you aren’t UCLA or USC in the Pac-10, nothing goes your way. To make that call at that point in the game is atrocious.

It’s not the first time, nor the last time a ref makes a bad call.
On the flipside…if a team has a more sizable lead. Then calls like this would be a non-issue.
Don’t blame a loss on one call. There are probably other things ASU didn’t do right which cost them the game.
I know, it’s much easier to focus in on the last few minutes or seconds of a game. What happends from start to finish is the real meat, not the last seconds.
I guess next time ASU(or others) will do better in building sizable leads. Where issues like, bad calls, won’t have any effect on the outcome.
I can’t waiting until this weekend…..let the brackey filling begin.

You’ll get a taste of what we deal with when you visit Arizona State in the fall. Pac-10 refs call all home games so that means you’ll have to deal with the same refs we deal with over the course of the game.

If Arizona State were using Manifold, this never would have happened.
Well James….we won’t have to worry about it. By the time it’s within the last minutes of the game. We’ll have at a mininium, 3 or 4 touchdown lead.
No bad calls will affect the outcome or should I say…the beating.

ps….I can somewhat sympathize thou. I hate bad calls especially when score is tight and close to end of regualtion. Let the players determine the outcome, not a person in stripes.
Stripes Making calls–
I strongly object to the idea that officials should “swallow” their whistles in the last minutes of a game — if its a foul with 15 minutes on the clock, it should be a foul with 1.5 seconds. All officials should strive for consistent calls. (And officials should also stick to making calls in their “zones” or confer).
With that being said, fouls should be called when it creates an advantage — ie don’t call traveling on a break-away highlight dunk.

Arizona State didn’t play very well down the end, I’ll give you that.
The problem is you want to have an opportunity to have a chance to win a game at the end of regulation. We did have that opportunity and a bad call basically changed the game. Depressing…

Also Steve Lavin during a Big Ten tournament game, nationally televised on ESPN: “The entire bracket has been affected by Pac-10 officiating the past two weeks.”
The officials were horrible that whole game, in a mostly balanced way. About a minute earlier there was a clearly incorrect call that went ASU’s way. With a bad call’s significance inversely proportional to time remaining in the game, it’s hard to argue that was the worst call of the game though.
Maybe next year. At least it wasn’t UofA that knocked you out. Fight on
Save yourself the agony. I spent ten years trying to justify losses by blaming bad calls, crappy refs, etc etc. The truth is, Sendek-coached teams have a history of not making adjustments down the stretch, resulting in looooong scoring droughts like the one ASU suffered here. Don’t score for almost 10 minutes in the second half? Not gonna win you many ballgames.

ASU has issues with our RPI which is probably the biggest reason why we’ll be in the NIT. A win over USC probably would have help overcome our RPI. For a ref to decide a game with a bad call is what every basketball fan fears.
I just grabbed the first article I could find. It was the wire article, it mentions the call, but doesn’t even call it controversial.
I agree that ASU’s RPI is going to keep it out. In-conference wins used to be enough for teams in the middle of the PAC10 and ACC to make the NCAA. Now, the committee wants to see out-of-conference wins too – and scheduling lightly out of conference was a serious concern about Sendek’s NC State teams too.
I still think ASU’s ten minutes without a basket had more to do with the outcome than that particular call.
Andrew, I think all use ASU grads agree, we put ourselves in a bad spot. But…
ASU was in a poistion to win the game at the end and a ref took them out. Not only did they disallow the basket, but gave free throws to USC. Quite a swing from a person who shouldn’t be making such a call at that time.

I think if they had allowed him to go over the back of a guy who had established rebounding position, it would have been worse. I just don’t see what the uproar is about.
You’re an idiot Andrew B. Textbook over-the-back? what game are you seeing? Any reasonable person knows that was a non-call, especially with less than a minute to go. Please save us your so-called analzying of bad calls, if you can’t see that was a bad call that potentially altered the outcome the game, then please stop typing you’re ignorance on these messageboards because you sound like an idiot.
Andrew: Even USC’s Davon Jefferson (who Pendergraph out jumped) said it was a bad call. He admited he jumped poorly and Pendergraph timed it wonderful. EVERYONE says the call was bad, even USC (because they know what Pac-10 refs are like and they’ve been on the bad end as well this season).
Well on to the NIT, #1 seed FWIW and at least 2 homes games in Tempe.
