You have to like Google’s commitment….

Reminds me of the old USPS motto, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat fire nor gloom of night stays these couriers Googlers from their appointed rounds”.

Update (2008-08-21): It looks like Google has just pulled down the Street View images of the fire.

Unbelievable! It gets even better when you open the larger view and check out all the different angles. You can see the fire trucks, hoses running down the street etc.

What is the white streak in the sky?

    Fleeing alien spacecraft?

Secret Google aircraft lighting fires to make content more interesting?

Pretty, cool. Go up Butterfly Dr. to Turtle Creek Dr. and you’ll see the fire hose hooked into a hydrant. Going up to Jacksonville-Cato Rd. You can see the fire starting…or ending. Looks like it around that time and the driver just drove straight over. That’s some rubber-necking for you.

  4. Chad says:

I am surprised they did not have the roads around there shut down to traffic… That is what they do for house fires, all nearby roads are closed off to traffic (unless the google driver just blew right through the “road closed” signs).

I think I saw an earlier photo where the Google driver threw a lit cigarette out the window that started the whole thing :-)

Now that the GooCar is down under, a whole new set of embarrassing pictures are popping up:

Following the hoses down the street to the east, at the intersection you find that hoses do indeed stop a Google car. The car came down the street at the other side of the block (which has the house on fire), found its way blocked by the hose, a red pickup truck, and a gesturing fellow. The car went around the neighborhood and later drove up to that intersection from the south (followed by a kid on a bike), and followed the hoses west until blocked by the fire truck. There is a data gap where the fire trucks were parked.

Yeah, but doesn’t it look like the Google driver saw the fire from about a mile away and said “hey, that would look cool on street view!” I wonder what their protocol is for the order that they record info. If they put a date/time stamp on the street views it would open up a pretty neat can of worms.

  9. ChrisW says:

So the big red trucks with the lights and stuff are Google cars…?

Time to sue Zillow and Google when you try and sell the house.

I’d love to see my face when I click on the street view of a house that was on fire when the Google Van drove by.

Honey, we aren’t buying this one!

  12. DannyB says:

    Aw, taken down.

Your right about using street view to go house shopping.. I’ve done that already. I like to check out the neighborhood.

  13. AA says:

That happened in the last couple of hours. I was just sharing that image with a co-worker before lunch.

  14. Chad says:

Dang. Anyone happen to grab a screen shot of that before hand? (I should have.. was expecting it to be taken down just out of respect for the home owners)

You can see it if you drive around a bit:
