PostGIS and the Open Source Geospatial Foundation

Paul Ramsey has a good post on his thinking to why PostGIS might not be part of the OSGF in at least the near future.

Does making the projects look better help us enough to offset the loss of direct project/company linkage?

I’d guess at least right now the OSGF has more to gain from the inclusion of PostGIS into the foundation than Refractions Research does. I don’t think any open source geospatial project really needs to join the OSGF today so taking a wait and see might be beneficial to both PostGIS and the foundation itself. Paul’s not saying he won’t join, and in the end PostGIS might end up in the foundation, but it is really good to see people thinking long term about their projects rather than jumping in before they are ready.
